15 countries joined the experts from Pakistan and carry out in-depth discussion
on various issues pertaining to unplanned urbanization being faced<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #0d0d0d; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; line-height: 16.5pt; text-align: justify;">Rahul Mehrotra, Professor and chair Department of Urban Planning and
Design, Harvard University was one of the major attractions for conference
participants. Rahul Mehrotra through his expert opinion enlighten the audience
about the problems faced by the cities was of the view that bad governance is the
most crucial problem being faced by all the cities of South Asian region.</span><br />
<div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 15.0pt; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;">

where various organizations, educational institutions and sponsors set up stall
to provide information about their activities. Out of many stalls at exhibition
area, an organization named Brooks Pakistan caught my attention. This
organization is working to create awareness about animal’s rights. They provide
free medical treatment to ailing animals and also educate owners about the
steps they need to take in order to keep their animals healthy. In Pakistan’s
scenario I can say that their work is really unique. Although most
organizations at exhibition area distributing brochures & pamphlets to
highlight their projects, but national disaster management cell & world
bank used technology to highlight themselves. National Institute of Disaster
Management provide a CD containing their activities but World Bank went a step
ahead and give out a USB to the people
visiting their stalls.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 16.5pt; margin-bottom: 11.25pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 15.0pt; margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify;">

extensive coverage in print and electronic media. Three major English language
newspapers of Pakistan that is Dawn, Express Tribune and The News through their
coverage proved a point that they understand the problems caused by unplanned
Urbanization and are ready to play a positive role in finding solution of these
problems.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

soft image. The foreigners present at the venue were very excited about their
visit to Pakistan. Commenting about Karachi Rahul Mehrotra, Professor and chair
Department of Urban Planning and Design, Harvard University said that Karachi
is a unique city and efforts must be made by city administration to maintain
the uniqueness of Karachi.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #404040;">The holy month of Ramzan is in progress. This is a special month in which Allah shower infinite blessings on Muslims.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Fasting during the month of Ramadan is obligatory and is done solely for Allah. In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah Most High says: “Every action of the son of Adam belongs to him except the fast. It is Mine, and I repay him for it.” (Muslim)</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">There can be neither false pretension nor showing off on the part of the one who is fasting. If one is offering prayers, giving zakah, making pilgrimage or any other form of worship, others can see one’s worship but fasting is distinguished by the fact that only Allah can see who is fasting and who is not.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Ramzan is a month to teach people how to discipline themselves & also to make the affluent realized the problems faced by their poverty stricken countrymen throughout the year. </span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Unfortunately in Pakistan we have forgotten the basic purpose of having this month in Islamic calendar.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #404040;">Allah in Quran said to believers ‘I don’t need your thirst & hunger, all I need is your piety’</span></b><u></u><u></u></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Rather than showing piety, we as nation continue the practice of fasting but did not make an effort to stop violating Allah’s command. Our traders & shopkeepers during this holy month indulge in hoarding & other malpractices and try & sell inferior quality products at exorbitant prices. </span></div>
<a name='more'></a><u></u><u></u><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">10% population of Pakistan is in control of more than 30% of country’s wealth. It is the responsibility of these wealthy families & individuals to look after their poverty stricken brother & sisters throughout the year & this responsibility increase more in the holy month of Ramzan.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Ramzan should be month in which showoff should be minimized but in our society showoff is strengthening its root. Long queues outside hotels & multinational restaurants are evidence of culture prevailing in society where an individual spend that much amount which is enough to feed one poor family of 5 to 6 members.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Television is another rising phenomenon. All channels are in a race to come up with content to attract viewers but none of the channel makes any effort to maintain sanctity of Ramzan. In good old days when we only have PTV, programs were designed to impart knowledge to viewers who want to learn about religion but now most television channels only busy in entertaining viewers even at the crunch time of Sehar & Iftar.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Eid is a festival which is observed to mark the end of holy month of Ramzan. It is very distressing that people around the country rush to markets to buy stuff for Eid in the last 10 days & nights of Ramzan although these last days are the essence of Ramzan. Last decade of Ramzan contain a night called Laila tul Qadar & according to Quran (Sura-E-Qadar) prayer of this night in better then the prayers of 1,000 years. Rather than searching for Laila tul Qadar majority of people waste their time in shopping & other social rituals. </span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Ramzan, is the month in which as an incentive Allah raises reward of good deed. According to a saying of holy prophet (peace be upon him) “Whoever draws near to Allah during it (Ramadaan) with a single characteristic from the characteristics of (voluntary) goodness, he is like whoever performs an obligatory act in other times. And whoever performs an obligatory act during it, he is like whoever performed seventy obligatory acts in other times.” (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 1887)</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; margin-bottom: 12pt;">
<span style="color: #404040;">Many of us think that “a perfect Muslim” is simply one who is correct in the observance of the salah (ritual Prayer), the fasting, the Zakat (payment of a certain portion of one’s wealth to the poor), and the Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah). This indeed is not the case.<br /><br />If the ritual observances do not help the person to be humble, virtuous and truly God-fearing, then he or she is not a real Muslim. A Muslim should be good and just in dealing with others, no matter their religion, and take special care to keep away from all the shameful and sinful things Allah has forbidden.<br /><br />One can never get close to Allah by being arrogant, full of pride and having a bad character and manners. Those who have humility and are humble and have good character and manners are the closest to Allah and Allah raises their ranks in the hereafter. The best person is the one who is best towards others</span></div>

us to build on it,” Dr Zaidi elaborated. “To really know if something was
causing diarrhoea, we included an equal number of controls. When we collected a
stool sample from a sick child, we also collected one from a well child

effects of diarrhoea were far more than immediate: height delays were
significant among children under 5 in Pakistan in the two months following the
diarrheal episode as compared to children in the control group without
diarrhoea.</span><span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Worse, children with diarrhoea were 13 times more
likely to die over the course of the two-month follow-up period, with most of
these deaths happening at home.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">“And this was despite WHO-recommended standard
management practices for diarrhoea being followed: each child in the community
was given rehydration therapy – orally and IV as needed – as well as zinc
supplementation, and antibiotics for dysentery. Yet the chance of death was
high with underlying malnutrition probably paying a significant role ,” Dr
Zaidi revealed.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">“GEMS strongly indicates that follow-up care after the
initial diarrheal episode is critical to protect the health and wellbeing of
children,” added Professor George Griffin, Senior Co-Chair of the GEMS
International Strategic Advisory Committee and Professor at St. George’s,
University of London. “By focusing only on the acute diarrhoea that brings
children to hospitals, we overlook a significant portion of diarrheal diseases’
burden.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Dr Thomas Brewer, deputy director of the Enteric &
Diarrheal Diseases team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which
funded the study, added: “Vaccines and treatments available today can save thousands
of children right now, and targeted research to develop new tools to combat
severe diarrhoea could save many more lives in the future.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Hence, Dr Zaidi hopes that the findings of this study,
particularly with regards to<i>rotavirus</i><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>vaccination
would be taken into consideration by the government of Pakistan and
international donors.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">“In addition to water and sanitation interventions,<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span> we need vaccines because<i>rotavirus<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span></i>is a widely occurring infection
that is not related to hygiene standards. It took us many years to introduce
pneumococcal vaccine in our national immunization programme, and I hope<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><i>rotavirus</i><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>vaccine becomes a part of our
immunization programme soon as well. Right now a single dose of<span class="apple-converted-space"><i> </i></span><i>rotavirus</i>vaccine costs
Rs. 4,500 but if it comes under the EPI cover then it will be free for all children,”
Dr Zaidi added.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">She also commented on the frequent presence of cholera
in the Karachi communities. “We usually hear of cholera in gastroenteritis
outbreaks, but in fact GEMS has revealed that cholera germs are commonly
isolated for children older than 1 year of age even in non-outbreak settings.
There is a good cholera vaccine available and we should consider it for cholera
prevention in Pakistan”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> </span><span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">“GEMS is a landmark study for the child health
community,” said Professor Fred Binka, Co-Chair of the GEMS International
Strategic Advisory Committee and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Health
and Allied Sciences, Ghana. “By using consistent methods across countries, GEMS
sites generated data that can guide evidence-based decision making at both the
local and global level."<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
MQM Chief Altaf Hussain yesterday through his statement announced to start a process of refinement in his party.<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px;">he said there was a complete ban in the party on collection of donation and any office-bearer or worker found collecting donation from anyone would lose the party’s basic membership.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #666666; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
He said the MQM would not tolerate ‘China cutting’, illegal occupation of public and private land, houses, flats and shops and there was no room in the party for people indulging in such activities.Today in an unprecedented move party chief suspended Rabta committe and appointed a 12 member adhoc committee to oversee party matters till the time new Rabta committee appointed </div>

<span style="background-color: transparent;">General party workers have many complains against Rabta committee as it was assumed that Rabta committee hijacked party. This is good move by MQM Chief to restructure party in Karachi &and London. MQM in past also took similar steps but failed to break Stranglehold which some senior member have on party. I hope this time all steps taken freely without pressure from any force with in & outside party to make MQM a vibrant party which it used to be a decade ago. To maintain political balance in Karachi, role of MQM is crucial. I wish good luck to MQM in coming days </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #474747; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. President (Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah): Ladies and
Gentlemen, I cordially thank you, with the utmost sincerity, for the honour you
have conferred upon me — the greatest honour that it is possible for this
Sovereign Assembly to confer — by electing me as your first President. I also
thank those leaders who have spoken in appreciation of my services and their
personal references to me. I sincerely hope that with your support and your
co-operation we shall make this Constituent Assembly an example to the world.
The Constituent Assembly has got two main functions to perform. The first is
the very onerous and responsible task of framing our future constitution of
Pakistan and the second of functioning as a full and complete Sovereign body as
the Federal Legislature of Pakistan. We have to do the best we can in adopting
a provisional constitution for the Federal Legislature of Pakistan. You know
really that not only we ourselves are wondering but, I think, the whole world
is wondering at this unprecedented cyclonic revolution which has brought about
the plan of creating and establishing two independent Sovereign Dominions in
this sub-continent. As it is, it has been unprecedented; there is no parallel
in the history of the world. This mighty sub-continent with all kinds of
inhabitants has been brought under a plan which is titanic, unknown,
unparalleled. And what is very important with regards to it is that we have
achieved it peacefully and by means of a revolution of the greatest possible
character.</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Dealing with our first function in this
Assembly, I cannot make any well-considered pronouncement at this moment, but I
shall say a few things as they occur to me. The first and the foremost thing
that I would like to emphasise is this — remember that you are now a Sovereign
legislative body and you have got all the powers. It, therefore, places on you
the gravest responsibility as to how you should take your decisions. The first
observation that I would like to make is this. You will no doubt agree with me
that the first duty of a Government is to maintain law and order, so that the
life, property and religious beliefs of its subjects are fully protected by the
State.</span></div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The second thing that occurs to me is this. One of the biggest
curses from which India is suffering — I do not say that other countries are
free from it, but, I think, our condition is much worse — is bribery and
corruption. (Hear, hear.) That really is a poison. We must put that down with
an iron hand and I hope that you will take adequate measures as soon as it is
possible for this Assembly to do so.</span><span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Black-marketing is another curse. Well, I know that
black-marketers are frequently caught and punished. According to our judicial
notions sentences are passed, and sometimes fines only are imposed. Now you
have to tackle this monster which today is a colossal crime against society, in
our distressed conditions, when we constantly face shortage of food and or the
essential commodities of life. A citizen who does black-marketing commits, I
think, a greater crime than the biggest and most grievous of crimes. These
black-marketers are really knowing, intelligent and ordinarily responsible people,
and when they indulge in black-marketing, I think they ought to be very
severely punished, because they undermine the entire system of control and
regulation of food-stuffs and essential commodities, and cause wholesale
starvation and want and even death.</span><span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The next thing that strikes me is this. Here again is a legacy
which has been passed on to us. Along with many other things good and bad, has
arrived this great evil -the evil of nepotism and jobbery. This evil must be
crushed relentlessly. I want to make it quite clear that I shall never tolerate
any kind of jobbery, nepotism or any influence directly or indirectly brought
to bear upon me. Wherever I find that such a practice is in vogue, or is
continuing anywhere, low or high, I shall certainly not countenance it.</span><span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I know there are people who do not quite agree with the division
of Indian and the partition of the Punjab and Bengal. Much has been said
against it, but now that it has been accepted, it is the duty of every one of
us to loyally abide by it and honourably act according to the agreement which
is now final and binding on all. But you must remember, as I have said, that
this mighty revolution that has taken place is unprecedented. One can quite
understand the feeling that exists between the two communities wherever one
community is in majority and the other is in minority. But the question is
whether it was possible or practicable to act otherwise than has been done. A
division had to take place. On both sides, in Hindustan and Pakistan, there are
sections of people who may not agree with it, who may not like it, but in my
judgment there was no other solution and I am sure future history will record
its verdict in favour of it. And what is more it will be proved by actual
experience as we go on that that was the only solution of India’s
constitutional problem. Any idea of a United India could never have worked and
in my judgment it would have led us to terrific disaster. May be that view is
correct; may be it is not; that remains to be seen. All the same, in this
division it was impossible to avoid the questions of minorities being in one
Dominion or the other. Now that was unavoidable. There is no other solution.
Now what shall we do? Now, if we want to make this great State of Pakistan
happy and prosperous we should wholly and solely concentrate on the well-being
of the people, and especially of the masses and the poor. If you will work in
co-operation, forgetting the past, burying the hatchet, you are bound to
succeed. If you change your past and work together in a spirit that every one
of you, no matter to what community he belongs, no matter to what community he
belongs, no matter what relations he had with you in the past, no matter what
is his colour, caste or creed, is first, second and last a citizen of this
State with equal rights, privileges and obligations there will be no end to the
progress you will make.</span><span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I cannot emphasise it too much. We should
begin to work in that spirit and in course of time all these angularities of
the majority and minority communities — the Hindu community and the Muslim
community — because even as regards Muslims you have Pathans, Punjabis, Shias,
Sunnis and so on and among the Hindus you have Brahmins, Vashnavas, Khatris,
also Bengalese, Madrasis and so on — will vanish. Indeed if you ask me this has
been the biggest hindrance in the way of India to attain its freedom and
independence and but for this we would have been free peoples long long ago. No
power can hold another nation, and specially a nation of 400 millions souls in
subjection; no body could have conquered you, and even if it had happened, no
body could have continued its hold on you for any length of time but for this.
(Applause.) Therefore we must learn a lesson from this. You are free; you are free
to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other
places of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or
caste or creed — that has nothing to do with the business of the State (Hear,
hear). As you know, history shows that in England conditions some time ago were
much worse than those prevailing in India to-day. The Roman Catholics and the
Protestants persecuted each other. Even now there are some States in existence
where there are discriminations made and bars imposed against a particular
class. Thank God we are not starting in those days. We are starting in the days
when there is no discrimination, no distinction between one community and
another, no discrimination between one caste or creed and another. We are
starting with this fundamental principle that we are all citizens and equal
citizens of one State. (Loud applause.) The people of England in course of time
had to face the realities of the situation and had to discharge the
responsibilities and burdens placed upon them by the government of their
country and they went through that fire step by step. Today you might say with
justice that Roman Catholics and Protestants do not exist: what exists now is
that every man is a citizen, an equal citizen, of Great Britain and they are
all members of the nation.</span><span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Now, I think we should keep that in front of us as our ideal and
you will find that in course of time Hindus would cease to be Hindus and
Muslims would cease to be Muslims, not in the religious sense, because that is
the personal faith of each individual, but in the political sense as citizens
of the State.</span><span style="color: #474747; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 14px;"><b><br /></b></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Media in Pakistan has evolved in the last decade or so and the
change is continuing. In past nation was totally dependent on print media to
acquire news. Whenever any incident happens, newspapers with in no time publish
special supplements providing more details of the incident to the people.
Masses were heavily dependent on B and C category newspapers to get taboo news.
Because of low literacy rate in country in restaurants, markets, street corners
one person read the newspaper and others hear him and then pass comments.
Pakistan Television was the only channel available and that was controlled by
the government so people search for other means such as listening to BBC Urdu
News to get a neutral view about country and city’s situation.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In Pakistan the first ray of change in media’s operation was
witnessed when STN got telecast rights and they show CNN & BBC in day time
and gave three to four hours air time to NTM, the first private channel of
Pakistan. Indus Vision was the 2nd private channel which starts
operation in 1995. ARY News start operation in late 90s and it is the first
channel to telecast news & current affairs shows independently free from
any government embargo. ARY’s show News on Views was one of the most viewed
show in its airing days.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Government relax its policies, licenses were granted and more
and more channels start operation. Country have only 4 channels till 2004 but
from that period onwards, the number raised rapidly and now we have one of the
strongest electronic media having more than 25 channels.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">This strong electronic media put a negative impact of newspapers
readership. Now in case of any eventuality, people rush towards television to
get the information. Government have no<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>control on these channels so people now have more trust on the news
aired on these channels.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">One most disturbing part of all this electronic media race is
that in an effort to garner more viewership, all channels are now focusing on
politics. Specialized Business channels like CNBC,AAJ and to some extent GEO
News are now totally inclined to air politics related content with little or at
times no focus on country’s economy.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Electronic media is effectively playing a role of opinion
former. Lawyers’ movement of 2007 is its primitive example when long hours of
live transmission tilted the opinion of whole nation in favor of the Chief
Justice sacked by the president of Pakistan<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Although electronic media captured lot of ground but still the
importance of print media cannot be denied.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Another new dimension which is fast gaining popularity is social
media. More & More organizations are now focusing on social media which is
gaining strength and growing rapidly.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Although awareness about social media rising but due to low
literacy rate and lack of equipment availability, penetration of social media
among lower and middle class is low.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="apple-style-span"><b><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%;">At this moment, in all this changing scenario the way electronic
media strengthen its roots in the society, I can safely say that future of
electronic media is bright but to move hand in hand with the global community,
I think we need to focus a bit more about creating awareness of social media
and its effectiveness in our society.<o:p></o:p></span></b></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="border: 1pt none windowtext; color: #333333; padding: 0in;">In 1988, the forty-first World Health Assembly, consisting then of delegates from 166 Member States, adopted a resolution for the worldwide eradication of polio. It marked the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, spearheaded by WHO, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This followed the certification of the eradication of smallpox in 1980, progress during the 1980s towards elimination of the poliovirus in the Americas, and Rotary International’s commitment to raise funds to protect all children from the disease.</span> In 1988, there were estimated to be 350,000 reported cases of polio in the world.<span style="border: 1pt none windowtext; color: #333333; padding: 0in;"> Overall, since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched, the number of cases has fallen by over 99%. In 2012, only three countries in the world remain polio-endemic. Persistent pockets of polio transmission in northern Nigeria and along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan are key epidemiological challenges.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="border: 1pt none windowtext; color: #333333; padding: 0in;">India is the recent entrant in the list of polio free countries. India was a country where highest numbers of polio cases were reported in 2009 and for them to become a polio free country is really commendable taking into account the fact that India is a population of one billion people.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="border: 1pt none windowtext; color: #333333; padding: 0in;">Pakistan joined the WHO polio eradication initiative a bit late in the year 1994.By this time most of the countries were declared polio free and polio was present in only 30 countries. Currently Pakistan is bracketed with that rare region of the globe where polio existed and although we are the sixth largest populous country of the world but like Afghanistan & Nigeria we too were unable to eradicate polio. A sad and worrying reality is that number of polio cases in Pakistan rose in last couple of years instead of decreasing.198 new polio cases were reported in Pakistan last year which is the highest number of polio cases reported in any country during this period. In comparison 81 cases were reported in Afghanistan and 95 in Nigeria last year. It is feared that if we as a nation did not discharge our responsibilities comprehensively in line with the goals set by the global community and not create awareness among masses about administering polio drops to children under five years of age, we may get the dubious honor of being the only country of the world having traces of polio virus.</span></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="border: 1pt none windowtext; color: #333333; padding: 0in;">To remove polio virus from Pakistan completely, following steps may be helpful</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #333333;">1)<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal;"> </span></span><span style="color: #333333;">Make sure that all children less than five years of age be administer polio drops whenever the immunization campaign conducted around the country.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #333333;">2)<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal;"> </span></span><span style="color: #333333;">All misconceptions about the vaccine are removed. The removal of misconception about the disease is a massive target as it is one of the major reasons of parents’ non-cooperation with vaccination teams especially in country’s rural area. Massive campaigns on print and electronic media should be carried out. In my point of view with the influx of private channels specially the news channels, country’s population are now most of the time viewing local channels and these channels can play a huge part in removing misconception about the vaccine and prompting parents to administer polio drops to their children.</span></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #333333;">3)<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal;"> </span></span><span style="color: #333333;">Steps should be taken to build proper infrastructure as in our many parts of the country we do not have proper sanitation facilities. Rotary international will soon be launching a project to build 500 toilets in high risk districts but Pakistan need proper toilets in all parts of the country and government should take all steps so that hygiene is maintained as unhygienic environment also a cause of polio’s spread.</span></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #333333;">4)<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal;"> </span></span><span style="color: #333333;">Budgetary allocation on health be massively increase. The audaciously low amount allocated in country’s budget for health & education sector is a clear indication of our government’s misdirected priorities. We need to reassess our priorities and bring them in line with the global perspective.</span></div>
<div style="color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #333333;">Polio eradication is crucial for Pakistan’s future as our people may face travel ban or other hassles like people going for pilgrimage may have to take polio drops irrespective of their age before embarking on the journey.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="color: #333333;">To prevent our self from global embarrassment, we as a nation must work together cohesively & seriously to make Pakistan polio free very soon. If India a country possessing 8 time more population then Pakistan can eradicate this menace in two years, I am sure that Pakistan can also eradicate polio if we honestly set our sight on this target.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="border: 1pt none windowtext; color: #333333; padding: 0in;">Once polio is eradicated, the world can celebrate the delivery of a major global public good that will benefit all people equally, no matter where they live. Economic modeling has found that the eradication of polio in the next five years would save at least US$ 40-50 billion, mostly in low-income countries</span><span style="color: #333333;"></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 13.5pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">On 11th
June I received an email from <a href="http://hammadsiddiquiblog.com/" target="_blank">Mr. Hammad Siddiqui </a>mentioning that I have been
registered to attend seminar he will be conducting to teach blogging techniques.
The workshop was organized under the umbrella of Center</span><span class="apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #333333; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> for International Private
Enterprise (CIPE) Pakistan (which is a non profit affiliate of the US Chamber
of Commerce) .</span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">As I
am passionate about blogging and already actively involved in it, I decided to
attend it thinking that this is an opportunity to horn my skills further and to
be honest my perception proved so right as during the day long workshop, I
learn a lot and will surely apply this learning while blogging in future.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Coming back
to the workshop, this workshop was conducted at a local hotel in Karachi.
Approximately 20 participants attend the workshop. Two of the passionate
participants travelled all the way from Hyderabad to attend this event</span><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This
workshop consisted of two sessions. In the first session which was conducted by
<a href="http://hammadsiddiquiblog.com/" target="_blank">Hammad Siddiqui,</a> participants were told how to develop a blog.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">To analyze
the story searching skills of participants, all participants were given a task
to roam around the premises of hotel and come back with a story. The purpose of
this activity was to emphasize the point that stories are always around you and
it is the skill of the writer to observe his surroundings and develop an
interesting story for his/her readers. It was also clarified that as a writer
does not write stories for yourself instead write them for your readers. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

to enhance your creativity and get recognition. Like all other activities,
blogging also demands consistency as reader is always on the look out for fresh

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;"><b><u><br /></u></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Pakistan’s politics in the last 64 years of country’s
existences passed through numerous tumultuous periods, which include imposition
of Martial Laws, division of countries into two separates states, fall of
governments because of conspiracies and bickering. Nepotism, corruption, lawlessness
is deeply rooted in our society. Number of our population currently living
below poverty level is rising rapidly and on the whole country is passing
through a very bleak period. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In our scenario, the worst situation is that our politics
has also become dormant and revolving waderas, landlords and some business
groups. Due to shoddy image of our existing politicians and because of various
reasons common man and other capable person put a self embargo and are not willing
to play any role in country’s politics thinking that politics is not for them. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
People mostly join politics to enhance their status in
society and also to increase their wealth. No one think of coming in politics
with the single aim of serving the people.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Considering the negatives being attached with our politics, corporate
tycoon Asad Umar’s edition to Pakistan’s trembling politics is a welcome edition.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Asad was attached with Engro for the last 27 years in
different capacities and assume position of company’s CEO & President in
2004. During this period he had played active role in the complete
transformation of his conglomerate and converted it into a <span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>diversified industrial business, with
interests ranging from fertilizers, foods, petrochemicals, chemical storage,
energy and commodity trading.</span> He enjoyed<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>a very good image among his friends & colleagues.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Some days ago he surprised everyone by tendering a request
for the grant of early retirement and later on joined a Pakistan Tehreek
–e-Insaf .</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A lot of professionals are part of our political system but
according to my information this is a first of its kind incident that a person
resigned from his profession to pursue full time politics. Asad’s gesture of
tendering his resignation is an indication that he is not joining politics to
strengthen or boost his organization but maybe he is one of those rare
inhabitants who consider politics as a method to serve the people and had
joined politics for this reason of serving humanity & country. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Pakistan at the time of Independence inhabited its systems
from the British rulers of India and majority of the rules & regulations
they set were not to serve the people but to rule the people. After
Independence, we were unable to formulate new regulations and continue with all
that was given to us by the British Raj. Sadly our politics was hijacked by the
landlords and waderas of rural Sindh & Punjab, majority of them were those
who were given acres of land by the British rulers to acknowledge their
services and who join Muslim League to support the cause of independence after
land reforms were announced by Congress. These area elders deliberately keep
their areas backward so that they rule the population instead of serving them.
Slowly but surely awareness creeping up with the help of media and it is
expected that situation may change and attain the correct path in future.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Asad Umar once during
a gathering claimed that when all the champions of democracy gone underground
during the Army takeover of 1999, he was alone on the roads for the cause of
democracy in the country. This is a commendable effort and considering the
reality that this effort in favor of democracy was made by a person whose
father was Army personnel made this effort for democracy more worthwhile. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Asad’s joining of politics need to be viewed carefully and
may act as a first drop of rain and may be other corporate leaders &
professionals following his path may join politics. He set<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>the precedence by leaving a profession where
he was earning more than 6.0 million<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>per
month and a lot of respect<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>in favor
of<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>an activity where he will surely
encounter an upside down and also have to face the wrath of other politicians.
Pakistan’s politics is revolving around few families whose generations are inheriting
party & country leadership not for their talent and capability but because
of their affiliation. In this situation if a person like Asad attains success
in politics, then his success will surely give others a confidence to venture
in politics to take their destiny in their own hands rather than leaving it to
those who are running the country for a long time without caring about the
problems & issues faced by the common man.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Asad’s joining of politics can be fruitful in increasing the
tax collection. At the moment, our tax to GDP ratio is lowest in the region and
in our overall mix of tax collection; rate of indirect taxes is 70%.For
successful economies, reliance on direct taxes will be much more compared to
indirect taxes. Asad being a corporate person knew about all the loopholes in
our tax system and he may be helpful in plugging these loopholes so as to
improve our tax to GDP ratio which in turn may lead to reduction of our
reliance on international donor agencies and may put country on the road to
self reliance.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Having a vast experience of running a corporation, he may
attain more success if in future he may think Pakistan as cooperation and run
it on the similar pattern if opportunity given to him or his party. Subsequent
governments of Pakistan for decades are giving deficit budget and may be in
years to come we need visionaries like Asad to turn around our financial
structures and expenditure habits in order to present a surplus budget.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To prosper, Pakistan need land reforms to free rural
population from the clutches of landlords. This is a major step which we as a
country need to take immediately. India introduced land reforms immediately
after independence and Bangladesh also implement land reforms after separation.
Now it’s our turn to implement these reforms. As Asad is not a landlord, maybe
he convince his party to introduce land reforms which surely act as a catalyst
to free small farmers and area residents from the authority of area elders</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Asad is a completely made in Pakistan product who himself
took his earlier education from a government school. Not only that he during
his professional tenure interact with numerous person from top to bottom and
should be well versed of the problems existing in our education system. With
all the information he possess, maybe he along with his political team can work
out and present a uniform education system for the people of Pakistan.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Asad Umar’s inclusion in Pakistan’s politics will surely
beneficial and I am optimistic that his admission to politics will have long
term positive impact on Pakistan’s politics and in future we may see more
progressive persons joining country’s politics.</div>

She went a step ahead and tendered her resignation from the National assembly. These steps taken by her, enhanced her image among the eyes of publics and it was felt that from now on she will take revolutionary steps in her politics and will do all her politics for the people of the country.</div><div class="MsoNormal">Change is the buzz word and it’s a mantra a lot of our political parties are trying to put forward to lure the public towards them. Imran Khan’s PTI was probably the first party in the current month to put forward itself a party who is willing to bring a real change in life’s of our countryman and now some other parties specially PML (N) are also trying to act as change leaders. PML (N) also claimed that they already brought change in people’s life by carrying out atomic blasts in 1998 although I am of the view that blast did not bring any change in life of common man.</div><div class="MsoNormal">Coming back to my topic, a lot of political analysts & critics were of the view that Marvi Memon will join PTI after she let her parent party but due to her differences with PTI’s leadership she did not join them. Couple of months ago when she did a jalsa is Sindh along with region’s well known journalist Qazi Asad Abid, it was thought that she along with some personnel from Sindh launch a new political party but that did not happen. Couple of weeks ago Marvi surprised her critics and supporters by announcing her decision of joining PML (N).As an analyst, I was really disappointed with Marvi’s decision to join PML (N) as I am of the view that even PML (N) like PPP is not serious to solve people’s problems and even after there more than four years of rule in Punjab they did not fulfill their promises. An example which I can quote is PML (N)’s promise to convert Punjab’s Chief Minister house into a university after coming into power but so far according to my information no step taken into this matter. Going further, I want to say that me and may be a lot of others are against PML (N)’s policies and are not in agreement with Marvi’s decision of joining the current rulers of Punjab but no one is authorized to malign Marvi on the basis of her decision. Difference of opinion among segments of society exists but sadly we as a society are not willing to accept difference of opinion.</div><div class="MsoNormal">PTTI is constantly showing it’s disgruntle from the day Marvi join PML (N) and are not leaving any opportunity to criticize her. Recent example of PTI’s frustration is a program of a private channel in which Marvi to appear as a guest. Even before the show went on air, I start receiving from PTI’s supporters and even received message from PTI’s official message center 80022 to watch this program. After the show also I received some messages that anchor was on top of Marvi and made her speechless. I am of the view that PTI should move forward now, come out of the frustration they felt on Marvi’s joining of PML (N). PTI should realize this factor that any of the current politician if change his/her loyalty is free to join any party and not all the disloyal join PTI.</div><div class="MsoNormal">PTI’s reaction on Marvi’s decision is an indication that sadly PTI is also acting like our established political parties who did not tolerate difference of opinion or are not willing to give respect to other person’s suggestions & decisions.</div><div class="MsoNormal">PTI is portrayed as a party who is capable of bringing real change in the country. People of the country are also fed up with the existing lot of politicians and may be this time they give vote to relatively new candidates or to those who are supported by newer political parties. In this situation PTI should take careful steps as among the all the untried political parties, there graph is much high and they may give tough fight to seasoned political parties.</div><div class="MsoNormal">I am also an anonymous supporter of PTI but I am not in agreement of party’s policy of intolerance. If PTI is really looking to bring change in the country, they must run a serious campaign via social media & other relevant methods to infuse and also enhance the level of tolerance of its supporters and workers. Already some columnist & anchors complained of lousy language used by party’s supporters if PTI is criticized.</div><div class="MsoNormal">My humble advice to PTI is to let’s move ahead forget Marvi Memon and others who not joined your party and focus on your agenda of bringing real change in the country. A large number of country’s population is hoping that if PTI got an opportunity to lead country, they may rid the country of the menace of corruption, price hike, lawlessness and other related problems and provide relief to the people and spread smile on the faces of common man.</div><div class="MsoNormal">PTI look at the bigger canvas, do not indulge in patty matters on who is joining you & who is not and prepare a through road map well in advance to solve country’s existing problems.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

A city which was once regarded as a city of light, a city which never sleeps now constantly in the grip of violence where person carrying sophisticated & modern weapons roaming freely on city streets looting the citizen at will, barging people homes & workplaces freely and running away with hard earned cash & other valuables. This city is transformed not as per the wishes of the people but this transformation is more because of the political & other elements who want to rule the city and its people. These elements not realizing that love & care are the method to attain public support on a long term basis.<a name='more'></a></span></div><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Karachi was a city where we roam around freely day & night without any fear, families go out fearlessly, this was a city which was termed a big hearted city capable of incorporating loads of people with expediency like a mother who take all its children and hide them under its wings.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Karachi faced a huge influx of population at the time of Independence, city in those days was devoid of infrastructure, camps were set up and people coming to city were accommodated in those camps. Those who were already residing in the city welcome the evacuees with open arms and create an environment where ever one lived with harmony. People love each other and were always ready to put forward a helping hand.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Barring some very rare incidence of violence, city mostly remain peaceful till 1980s.This was the time when USSR invaded Afghanistan and Pakistan being a neighboring country of Afghanistan felt the effects of this war. We not only entered the war fully on the pretext of Jihad to please USA but also have to bear the burden of huge number of Afghan refugees. Taking care of these refugees has extremely negative impact on economy and also on country’s resources. Another negative aspect was that our government failed to contain these Afghan refugees to any particular city or to the refugees camps and these people were spread in whole of the country especially to the major cities in search of livelihood. The spread of these refugees promote drugs, ammunition and trade of smuggled goods. Karachi being a motherly city accept all these refugees with open arms but was unaware that how its new residents negatively impact the existing citizen. Drug culture was on the rise and a very large number of city’s youth start using heroin. On the outskirts of the city markets were established where smuggled items were easily available and this market not only hurt the local industry but also negatively impacted the items coming through legal channels and all this negatively impacted the economy. The Afghan refugees from the money earned bought properties in the cities and slowly but surely increase their stakes here. This in my view is the foundation of land mafia. As population grow enormously, so does the needs of citizens increased.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The need for food and clothing is handled as we being an agriculture based economy are self sufficient in food crops and also our textile industry was in a fine shape to meet the clothing requirement of people but providing shelter was a difficult task and that is where the city dynamics changed. Some person or institution may analyze that this city need not houses or bungalows but it require huge apartment complexes to fulfill residential needs of the citizens. Once this trend of living in apartments gets rooted among the masses builders & developers blindly start construction and for their sake, they also get customers willing to buy these apartments. As construction of apartment complexes rise, price of land witnessed exorbitant increase and this un expected increase in land price lead to land grabbing & fraudulent sale of property. Land grabbers are mostly powerful persons or group having strong support so to get the land evacuated some time claimants retort to violence & gun battles. Initially this violence was restricted to particular area but later on when political parties of the city start indulging in these matters, things started to go out of hand and also violence or firing if it start in a certain area of the city doesn’t stop there but spread to whole of the city rapidly.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Karachi saw many operations carried out by law enforcement agencies and these operations play a positive role in curbing violence in the city and keeping it peaceful so that life remain normal and people move around the city without fear. After a long time Karachi witness a relative period of calm & harmony from 2002 to 2008.Although some sporadic incidence happened in that period also but overall environment was good and a lot of development was done in this period.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After the elections in February 2008, it was expected that city will remain on the path of harmony and citizens continue e to enjoy threat free movement. Sadly these expectations failed miserably and city for the last four year is constantly witnessing bloodshed. Violence erupts every second or third month and no government institution able to control it before 15-20 killings and 25-30 burnt vehicles. This is an extremely sad state of affairs as families are losing their loved ones who in most of the cases are the bread earners also. This is a double loss as family not only lose its loved one but also losses it financial independence. We the citizens of Karachi are now too much frustrated & depressed with what is going on in the city and appeal to all those who are at the helm of affairs to sit together and honestly try to find out the solution of all the problems this city which is termed as mini Pakistan is facing. Citizens of the city are facing traumas and various types of diseases because of the environment of fear in which they are forced to live because of the prevailing situation.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I want to suggest some steps which may be helpful in restoration of long term peace in Karachi </span></div><div class="MsoListParagraph" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: -0.25in;"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">1) <!--[endif]-->Government should try and make this an ammunition free city for some months or may be for couple of years. <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">The global food crisis has affected hundreds of millions of people worldwide, causing a surge of sociopolitical unrest in many countries as families struggle to find ways to survive soaring food and fuel prices.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">Many regions in Africa and Asia are experiencing a food crisis that is contributing to hunger, malnutrition and starvation there. According to experts, the real cause of food crises include natural disasters, pest and plant diseases, urbanisation, increasing prices of fuel and fertilisers, and the shortage of water rather than population increase.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">The seminar was organised by Dr Viqar Sultana, Professor, Department of Biochemistry; Dr Syed Ehteshamul-Haque, Professor Department of Botany; and Dr Jehan Ara, Professor and Chairperson Department of Food Science and Technology, KU, to bridge the gap between scientists and farmers. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">Chairman Karachi Market Committee and former minister Abdul Hakeem Baloch was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Athar Tariq (PhD, DSc), in charge Pest Detection and Emergence Projects, California, also participated in the programme. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">Highlighting the severity of the global food crisis, Dr Ara said in the inaugural address that prices of foods that formed the staple diet of half of the world’s population had almost doubled in the last few years, stressing that concentrated public and private investment was crucial for boosting agricultural production.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">New virulent strains of fungal disease ie wheat stem rust (Ug99) was spreading fast and hence, over 80 percent of wheat varieties were susceptible to this fungus, she said. At the same time, mango decline and citrus greening were emerging threats to the fresh fruit exports of Pakistan. Citrus greening caused by a phloem-inhabiting bacterium was an alarming disease for which appropriate measures needed to be taken, she stressed. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">Mubarik Ahmed, explaining the food security problem, said that if the matter was not taken seriously, Pakistan would be at a risk of a famine in the near future. Dr Badar Uddin Soomro credited the efforts of scientists in increasing the yield of several major crops such as wheat, rice and cotton, adding that these efforts should be continued to meet the future growing requirements of food. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">Haque said that farmers had lost 30 percent of the crops through pests and other diseases plus another 25 percent due to post harvest diseases and deterioration. Incorrect or misleading identification of the disease also added to losses in the form of cost of pesticides, he added. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">But fortunately, due to advances in biotechnology and molecular biology, new products and techniques were becoming available that were helpful for the correct and timely identification of the diseases, he added.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">He also emphasised the role of bio-fertilisers in not only protecting the plants from root diseases but also improving plant growth. Dr Imtiaz Ahmed said that after several years of research in bio-technological methodology they were able to produce and commercialise some high-yielding varieties of sugarcane which were also drought tolerant.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">Dr Tariq Rajput explained how the pests affected the agricultural crops and what methods should be adopted by the farmers. Pervaiz Hussain, a progressive farmer, explained the agricultural problems of farmers and requested the scientists to join hands with them. Due to rising awareness about the adverse effects of pesticides, organic farming was becoming very popular, he informed. Fatheh Ali, on the other hand, explained how to grow organic fruits and vegetables in home gardens. </span>Khurram Ziahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10240029699181689366noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7324753132898398216.post-53892523017277262582012-02-04T08:20:00.000-08:002012-02-04T08:20:59.948-08:00Farming Ideas to discuss Food Crisis<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">A one-day seminar was organised by the University of Karachi (KU) on Friday to provide a platform to scientists and progressive farmers to interact and share ideas and knowledge for developing strategies in combating the emerging food crises.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">The global food crisis has affected hundreds of millions of people worldwide, causing a surge of sociopolitical unrest in many countries as families struggle to find ways to survive soaring food and fuel prices.</span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 12px;">Many regions in Africa and Asia are experiencing a food crisis that is contributing to hunger, malnutrition and starvation there. <tr><td class="small_txt" style="font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 9pt;"></td></tr>
<tr><td class="small_txt" style="font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 9pt;">Thousands of people annually die due to various types of cancers in Pakistan including lungs, breast, and different kinds of blood cancers while the disease is responsible for approximately 70 percent of the deaths in low and middle-income countries such as Pakistan.<br />
“Together it is possible,” this year’s theme for World Cancer Day, highlights the importance of raising awareness and education about the disease as well as implementing early treatment programmes to reduce cancer rates and improve the chances of survival.<br />
Several health institutes both in the public and private sector would be holding awareness activities on Saturday (today) to mark the World Cancer Day and highlight its causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment available in Pakistan.<br />
The Children Cancer Hospital (CCH), a private-sector health facility for treatment of cancers in children would be holding an awareness seminar on Childhood Cancer in the morning that would be addressed by children cancer experts from Mayo Clinic USA, leading Pakistani Paediatrician Dr Iqbal Memon and other cancer experts.<br />
The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) will hold a day-long seminar on February 4, World Cancer Day, to create awareness about the prevalent types of cancers in Pakistan and the measures required to tackle this growing menace.<br />
The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) is also holding various activities including a seminar, tableau, lectures and patient stories while experts would highlight the cancer risk factors, diagnosis and treatment.<br />
The National Institute of Blood Diseases and Omair-Sana Foundation (OSF) would jointly hold a seminar on blood cancers among Pakistani children at NIBD auditorium and experts would speak on the causes and prevention of blood cancers.<br />
Experts say extensive consumption of tobacco and betel nut is one of the reasons that residents of large cities – such as Karachi – who belong to the lower socio-economic classes where the literacy rates are low, are at the highest risk of acquiring the disease.<br />
Prevalent among these populations are head and neck cancers which affect the inside of the nose, sinuses, lips, mouth, salivary glands, throat or the voice box. According to Dr Shabbir Akhtar, Consultant ENT Surgeon, AKUH, early detection and surgery combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy for patients with advanced disease is the preferred treatment for patients with head and neck cancer.<br />
The increasing incidence of liver cancer is another cause for concern for health care professionals such as Dr Rizwan Khan, Consultant General Surgeon, AKUH who links the rise of liver cancer directly to the increase in cases of hepatitis B and C as well as alcohol consumption, diabetes and obesity.<br />
The treatment options for liver cancer depend on the stage of the disease, how well the liver is working and the overall condition of the patient. The only proven options for treating liver cancer are surgically removing the diseased part of the liver and liver transplantation. “Although the overall prognosis is not very promising, this is a disease that can be prevented by societal and lifestyle changes,” says Dr Khan.<br />
Lifestyle changes play a significant role in reducing the chances for ovarian cancer, one of the most common malignancies found in women in Pakistan. “The stage at which ovarian cancer is detected has an effect on its prognosis”, says Dr Aliya Aziz, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, AKUH.<br />
A staging system developed by the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) rates the chances of survival at 87 per cent if the cancer is detected in stage IA (the earliest of stages) as compared to only 11 per cent for those cancers detected in stage IV.<br />
Breast cancer makes up one third of all cancers in women, with one in nine women at risk of developing the disease. Pakistan has the highest incidence of breast cancer in Asia.<br />
“If you are over 40, you are at a high risk for the disease and should have an annual mammogram and physical exam by a doctor,” says Dr Yasmin Abdul Rashid, Consultant Medical Oncologist, AKUH.<br />
Some of the risk factors associated with breast cancer include advancing age, a close relative with breast cancer, first childbirth at more than 30 years of age and hormone replacement therapy.<br />

<tr><td class="small_txt" style="font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 9pt;"><b>By: Air Marshal (retd) Shahid Lateef</b></td></tr>
<tr><td class="small_txt" style="font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 9pt;">ISLAMABAD: The present national scene is muddled with disarray, discontent and dejection. The vanquished people feel betrayed, while the victorious leadership is shedding crocodile tears and warning about the dangers being posed to democracy.<br />
In reality, it is the rulers who are endangered due to their pathetic performance, while the institution of democracy being proven, pragmatic and productive in nature, faces no threats. It has become a fashion with the civilian governments, to attribute their failures to the periodic army interventions. Though, there have been sporadic military transgressions, which remained responsible for upsetting the apple-cart, the truth still lies somewhere in the middle.<br />
The cumulative effects of the alternating civil-military leaderships that remained busy in serving themselves and their foreign masters have finally brought this country to the brink of disaster. The current government is plagued with every failure that can occur under the sun. The downslide, therefore, continues unabated.<br />
The US approach towards Pakistan has undergone a radical change. Having realised that Pak military is a major hurdle in the achievement of their agenda on India and Afghanistan, due to divergent interests, they have decided to part ways with our army, and go whole hog behind the civilian government, which they find to be much more amenable and compliant. There is enough evidence to believe that the newly adopted strategy of minimising military influence is being vigorously pursued.<br />
We may start connecting dots from the first move that the government made soon after it took over, to place the ISI under Interior Ministry, which backfired. Having failed in this initiative, the US was requested to make an attempt to cut the armed forces to size, through the infamous Kerry-Lugar Bill, which was also foiled. Then came the Raymond Davis episode in which, two citizens were ruthlessly murdered in broad daylight and the killer was whisked away to safe heavens, making the army/ISI look small and helpless. In continuation of the same endeavour, a huge blow was struck to the military’s image during OBL’s operation in Abbottabad, which was planned particularly to discredit the armed forces and expose the ISI. The brazen display of bullying and barbarism by Nato forces on Salala check post, has been the latest in the series of gruesome and unprovoked aggressions, the reasons for which are yet to be explained. Additionally, the diplomatic offensive by US to malign Pak military, continues unabated and has gained intensity with the passage of time.<br />
The extensions in service granted by the government to COAS and DG ISI, were meant to oblige and seek the armed forces’ alignment with the US objectives. In the most incoherent message heard over decades, the prime minister announced in a hurriedly arranged mid-night TV transmission that, by granting a three year extension to the army chief, the government had provided ‘safety’ to all ‘big four’, up to year 2013. It may be noted that the government and the Chief Justice, both have their office tenures approved up to the same time period. As the COAS’ extension came under intense criticism in various circles, the PM rushed back to his advisers and sought a more palatable justification. Since then, in keeping with his usual pattern, he has changed stance, saying that the country could not afford change of commanders, in the middle of a war, being fought against terrorism.<br />
Nevertheless, the special favour by PM has not received a corresponding response from the army. The PM’s frustration is manifested in his frequent diatribes against the armed forces, for not having acquired the ‘intended’ control over them despite his generosity.<br />
In the continuous process of societal degeneration, the two most treacherous events that have threatened Pakistan, with a potentially explosive and deadly clash between state institutions, involve the NRO and Memogate conspiracies. Both are simple and straightforward cases, but taking full advantage of the intricacies of law, they have been made extremely complex and complicated by the perpetrators. There is a typical characteristic of the evil forces, that crimes in which they are likely to be caught, are compounded and confused beyond comprehension, so that they are difficult to prove in the court of law, where clear and concise evidence is needed.<br />
The first such case is NRO in which, the present government was explicitly instructed by the apex court to approach the Swiss authorities, asking them for return of the laundered money from Pakistan. All the national watchdog agencies remained indifferent, which emboldened the government to show blatant defiance to the judicial orders. Finally, the court is now proceeding with ‘contempt’ charges against the PM, and unless supported by the other power centres, its outcome would be highly doubtful.<br />
The Memogate scandal is far more serious, as it involves a conspiracy against the security and survival of the country. Its credibility has been validated both by the COAS and DG ISI, through affidavits submitted to the SC. The prime witness of the case has been successfully prevented from appearing before the court, due to refusal of providing adequate security needed by him for his protection. The main accused, after brief confinement in the country, has been allowed to proceed abroad, which is being contemplated as the drop scene of this lethal case too. Since the Army/ISI are an involved party in this grievous matter, the responsibility of ensuring an impartial investigation rests squarely on their shoulders. To guard their own prestige, the evolving impression that this drama was staged only to knock out Ambassador Haqqani, must be dispelled.<br />
The forces at play and precarious circumstances faced by the country, present a devastating picture. The political parties are playing politics of sell-offs and self-interest, with least regard to any other consideration. The judiciary is feeling weak, as its main supporters, who also spearheaded the historic ‘lawyers movement’, have been cleverly divided and dispersed. The media is being used to promote vested interests. While there is a deliberate campaign to keep the military establishment on the back foot, due to its past follies, it has to break out of these shackles, come forward and play the traditional role of ‘saviours’, but this time, working within the constitution.<br />
It should encompass taking the NRO and Memogate scandals expeditiously to their logical ends (under Article190); then, assist SC to form a national government of clean and competent individuals, who must reform the entire electoral process and make Pakistan stand on its feet, before conducting free, fair and impartial elections in the country. This has to be accomplished in the true spirit of the solemn oath, undertaken by all armed forces personnel, that they shall protect their motherland under all circumstances, even to the peril of their lives. Dithering at this stage will result in a collective suicide.<br />

The polio virus enters the body through the mouth, usually from hands contaminated with the stool of an infected person. Polio is more common in infants and young children and occurs under conditions of poor hygiene. Paralysis is more common and more severe when infection occurs in older individuals. Polio is spread when the stool of an infected person is introduced into the mouth of another person through contaminated water or food (fecal-oral transmission). Oral-oral transmission by way of an infected person's saliva may account for some cases.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 115%;"> Maintaining high levels of polio immunization in the society is the most helpful precautionary measure.</span><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 115%;"><o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 115%;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal">Globally a lot of work is being done to eradicate polio from all parts of the world and in most countries of the world no new polio case reported and these countries are now declared polio free. India is a recent example where no new polio case reported last year and World Health Organization is considering declaring India polio free country.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">This is good news for the region and now its Pakistan’s turn to get serious for the eradication of this menace from the country. Polio is an epidemic and its virus travel fast so a patient suffering from polio is hazardous for the surroundings also. For the long term safety of India from this endemic, it is advisable that government of India also cooperate with Pakistan for polio’s eradication. Now that we have given them MFN status so along with business we should work jointly for a polio free Pakistan in coming years. On Pakistan’s part, we should work with honesty & try to remove all the misgivings about polio drops prevailing in the society and make sure that teams administering the process of polio drops reach all parts of the country. A recent statement by Sindh’s provincial health minister highlighted the fact that polio exists in Pakistan because children are undernourished. This is sad state of affairs and clear failure of our governments past & present and also of other relevant agencies. A country which is the fifth largest milk producer in the world, one of the largest exporter of rice and also self sufficient in many other agriculture products can’t even feed its nation properly.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Polio is eradicated in most of the countries now. It only exists in 5 countries of the world and sadly Pakistan is one of them.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">A number of global organizations are making efforts to eradicate polio from Pakistan. An example of this support is Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Japan will provide 4.9billion yen ($65million) loan to support polio eradication activities in Pakistan through 2013.The loan will repaid by the Gates foundation if the project finances are successfully implemented by the government of Pakistan. This itself a very good initiative one which should be taken seriously and worked upon in a proper manner as successful implementation can be doubly beneficial for the people of Pakistan.</div><div class="MsoNormal">Pakistan is a country of 180million where as India’s population is in excess of 1 billion. We as a nation need to take this as a challenge and cohesively work on war footings for polio eradication.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<br />
Far too many children are living with a mom who is unhappy, frazzled and stressed out. Children flourish when they are raised in a home with happy, balanced parents. The best way to give more to your children is by giving more to yourself: by doing this, you can become a valuable role model for them of a happy, healthy adult.</span><span style="color: #4c4545; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Giving more to you also means you'll be able to give more to your family. “But I don’t have time!,” I hear many moms whine. We all have 24 hours in a day, and we all need to make wise choices that put the main priorities in our life first. If we are repeatedly burning the midnight oil, we may be on the brink of burnout—not a pleasant event for you or your family.<br />

Laughing, tickling, and playing together is the foundation of a happy home. Having fun can go a long way in providing your family with much needed quality time and in preventing much of the needless conflict and behaviors that drive you crazy. Children who experience a regular dose of quality time with their parents do not need to act out to get their attention. </span><span style="color: #4c4545; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div></td> </tr>

<br />
Kids need to feel in control of certain areas of their life. They also need boundaries. Create family rules but ensure that there is flexibility too. For instance a family rule might be that the common areas of the home need to be clean before bed, but the tidiness of the children’s room are left up to them (as you can always shut their bedroom door if the lack of order really bugs you). Fights are based upon two people with opposing views—sometimes a third way can be found that works for both you and your child. Look to find this alternate way. If there is no third way agreeable to both you and your child ensure you present your request in a firm but gentle manner. Remember to stay focused on the issue rather than trying to be right! </span><span style="color: #4c4545; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div></td> </tr>

If you consistently repeat yourself and then don’t follow through on what you've said, you are teaching your kids to ignore you (and especially to ignore you the first time you say you're going to do something). If you are not going to do what you say your are going to do—you are basically teaching your children that your word is muck and can’t be trusted. By following through on your word consistently you will begin to pave the road that leads to your children hearing you the first time. </span><span style="color: #4c4545; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></div></td> </tr>

<a href="http://tribune.com.pk/story/319976/not-another-coup-please/">No coup is about to take place</a> in a Pakistan where the independent media has ensured that every move by every player on the national power scene is examined threadbare. This exercise in itself is both a leveller and a restrainer. Had there been an independent electronic media in October 1999 there would have been no coup. Examination of every move gives a fair share of public hearing and also self-examination, to all players. The resulting public censure, or approval, now informs the power players of the limits of their power, constitutional or otherwise. So while in the coming days we will see and hear some trial ballooning, some real moves, some political rhetoric, some bombastic claims, some propaganda, some shadow-boxing as well as alarmist breaking news, none of this is likely to send the president, prime minister, or the army or ISI chief packing.<a href="http://tribune.com.pk/story/320505/how-a-vibrant-media-can-thwart-a-coup/" target="_blank"><br />
